Child Health Liaison (CHL)
A Child Health Liaison (CHL) is a health and safety advocate in a center-based program or family child care home. In a center, the CHL partners with the Child Care Health Consultant (CCHC) to provide support to staff, children and families around a variety of health and safety topics. These topics may include information on communicable disease, immunizations, playground safety, nutrition and the care of children with special health care needs in child care. In a family child care home the provider is the CHL and uses and shares this health and safety information as she works with children and families.
Free Child Health Liaison Course
A free Child Health Liaison course is available online and is a good training resource for early childhood education providers interested in improving health and safety in their programs. As a student in this course, you are encouraged to maintain a Child Health Liaison notebook. As you finish each module, add your completed workbook to the notebook, along with any resources you found helpful. Upon completion of the course, you can use this notebook as an on-going resource in your role as a health and safety advocate for your child care program.
Even if you are not interested in formally completing the training modules you will find the resources provided in each of the modules to be very valuable as you work to improve the health and safety of the children in your child care program.
