The first edition of the 2012 Gateway Newsletter features the article Rethinking Pre-K: 5 Ways to Fix Preschool. The nonprofit Pew Charitable Trusts has invested 10 years and some $100 million in studying preschool and spearheading a movement to get states to offer more of it and in smarter ways. This article highlights recommendations made by Pew in their new report "Transforming Public Education: Pathway to a Pre-K-12 Future."
Please view the November issue to access the link to Hearing Bilingual: How Babies Sort Out Language. This article supports the research that infants who are exposed to multiple languages do not suffer from confusion, but actually benefit from the multiple languages. The author discusses babies' ability to understand 2 languages and states that bilingual babies are "more cognitively flexible" than monolingual infants.
The June edition of Gateway features an article that is an in-depth look at Instructional Coaching and reflective practice strategies in a paper titled Instructional Coaching: Helping Preschool Teachers Reach Their Full Potential.
This edition discusses The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University's explain of how lifelong brain skills develop in their working paper titled Building the Brain's "Air Traffic Control" System: How Early Experiences Shape the Development of Executive Function: Working Paper No. 11.

New Safe Sleep Guidelines
Tragically, deaths from SUID, accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed, make up for 10 percent of all infant deaths in Colorado every year. The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment has added new information to its Violence and Injury Prevention Network website.
