New Campaign to Ensure Background Checks for Child Care Providers

Posted on June 16, 2011 in Child Care Provider Resources

The National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (NACCRA) has launched a new campaign to raise awareness for the need for background checks for child care providers. NACCRA argues that requiring background checks will help ensure that the 11 million U.S. children enrolled in child care are being cared for by providers without criminal backgrounds. NACCRA endorses a comprehensive background check, which includes a fingerprint check against state and federal records, a check of the sex offender registry, and a check of the child abuse registry.
Currently, there are no laws requiring background checks for child care providers. Legislation is pending in Congress to require comprehensive background checks for all licensed child care providers and for providers receiving Child Care and Development Block Grant subsidies.
