United Way Call to Action

Posted on June 21, 2011 in Early Learning Policy

In order to work to build early literacy, United Way Worldwide is launching a call to action to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors across the nation. According to data collected by the United Way, students who don't read at grade level by third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma than kids who are proficient readers.

Today, 30 percent of Colorado’s third-graders, more than 17,000 children, are at risk. Mile High United Way is stepping forward to say, “Reading Matters.” Please join www.UnitedWayDenver.org in this critical initiative to address Colorado’s literacy crisis.

Whether you can volunteer one day a week or one day a month, consider becoming a volunteer reader, mentor or tutor. To sign up, go to www.UnitedWayDenver.org and click “Reading Matters”
